Wine Snob

Don't invite this man to your house!

I’ve met a lot of people who are just starting to drink and enjoy wine. Almost without exception, when hanging out with us more experienced wine catz, they seem slightly embarrassed by their lack of knowledge about wine, and even more so about their preferred choices.

I’ve had more than wine novice say to me, rather sheepishly, and with a wrinkled nose, “I really don’t like red wine.” To which I usually reply, “That is normal for someone just starting out drinking wine.”

I think people should drink just what they like – not what people think they should like – but not to be afraid to experiment! If people keep tasting different wines, even ones they think they may not like, they may find one day that they DO like reds, or dry whites, or whatever it was they didn’t used to enjoy.

Whether it be a very special wine that changes their mind, or just a palette that has matured, most people that like wine and keep on drinking it find that the list of wines they appreciate grows over time.

It is too bad that many people feel intimidated by learning about wine, or feel a need to excuse their personal tastes. After all, nobody thinks less of you if you choose apple juice over orange, or chicken over beef. Why should it matter what wine tastes best to you at any stage of your wine journey?

There are people – wine snobs if you will – that will roll their eyes and titter over a person who offers a sweet red wine at a get together, or that enthuses over an inexpensive white zinfandel.

Shame on them.

Every person experiences food and wine differently. Whether a person is just starting out, or they have an experienced and discerning palette, no two people will get the same thing out of a glass of wine. And even if they did, personal preferences would still dictate that one person may enjoy the wine more that the other.

Absolute rules about wine, what is good and what is not, are silly. There are guidelines, such as those about wine and food pairing, that can help a person enjoy wine more fully as you journey along. But if you like a glass of white with your steak, then pour it out and enjoy! The only person you should be trying to satisfy is yourself. (If you have guests however, having a more traditional red on hand also to offer them with the steaks, in case that is what they prefer, might be in order. :) )

Wine Catz feel that it is important in life to enjoy and be comfortable in your own skin – not to try to impress anyone else. If you feel the same, we are glad you are here!
